Why should I recycle my used motor oil?
Oil recycling is something that is free and easy to do. There are many places where used car oil and filters can be recycled.
Used motor oil is not only dirty but also it can harm our communities. In the oil there may be toxic substances such as lead, zinc, and benzene. One quart of motor oil can pollute 250,000 gallons of water. Americans spill over 180 million gallons of used oil every year into our lakes, rivers and streams, making used motor oil the single largest source of oil pollution.
You should also recycle your used oil filters. Almost half of each filter’s weight can be used motor oil. These should not go into the garbage. Most places that recycle used oil will recycle the filters as well. If you cannot recycle your oil filter, puncture and drain it for at least 24 hours before putting it in the garbage. Then recycle the oil you collect after draining the filter.
